Random map is one of my favorite games to play, because it is fun and challenging to start from nearly nothing and efficiently utilize the resources available. When playing Age of Empires in multiplayer, there are several types of games to be played and one of them is random map nomad. When setting up this game, the following options often are selected:
- Random Map
- Map size (varies depending on the number of players)
- Victory: Default
- Terrain: Highland
- Starting Age: Nomad
- Resources: Default
- Reveal Map
- Population preferably set to 200
The civilization you choose is up to you, though for this example I will use the Assyrian civilization. Each player starts off with one villager, and is spaced out throughout the map. Select this villager and look for the nearest pile of berries and build your town center between the berries and a group of trees. Doing this helps save time in the distance your villagers have to walk, as time is often crucial to winning.

I then take this opportunity to do a quick check of the nearby surroundings for more food, such as berries and animals to hunt. I especially like it when I find elephants near trees.

After your town center is completed, send your villager to chop down a nearby tree for some wood. While you are doing that, select the town center, and click to create another villager. When the next villager pops out, also send him to help chop wood. Now create another villager, and when he pops out send him to the nearby berries. Create another villager in the town center and check at the top of your screen to see how much wood you have.

Right about now you should have 30 wood, and take your first 2 villagers and build a house nearby but in a location that will be out of the way for your villagers. Also try not to build too close to your town center, as you may need the space later down the line.

After the house is completed, you can check the status of your population by clicking on the house, then looking at the bottom left corner of your screen to see the capacity limit of your town. Each house or town center can hold up to 4 villagers each. Make sure you build keep building houses before your population reaches current capacity, or your progress will be hampered by this mistake. You never want to see this when you're trying to make more villagers:
